The 2018 Toyota CH-R is a 4-door small mock-crossover, designed for urbanites, empty nesters, and singles. At $29,129 for the top-of-the-line“Limited” trim, the 2.0L four-cylinder engine with its 144 horsepower is peppy enough for errands around town or decent merging on freeways. The CH-R is highly stylized with a two-door coupe look. The backdoor handles are tucked up high into the pillar, which looks cool but awkward when burdened with packages.

The CH-R Limited has the latest driver assistance systems and an excellent back up camera, a specifically critical feature it turns out. Visibility in the CH-R is compromised, particularly the rear passenger window, which was nearly entirely blocked by the front passenger seat with an average height passenger. I was forced to rely entirely on the backup camera to reverse out of nearly any spot.

The front-wheel-drive CH-R is not available with All-Wheel drive, a near-necessity in any snowy locations. The CH-R starts at $20,995 and I averaged 25.8 miles per gallon, a little lower than estimates at 27 city/31 highway. It was fun to drive and looks great, but for colder climes, there are better choices such as the Buick Encore, Hyundai Kona, or Honda HR-V.
