Ingress and egress are effortless, even for my petite stature, and finding a comfortable seating position is straightforward. Large windows afford broad visibility with the drive height benefiting from nearly 9” of ground clearance.
Quality materials grace the Subaru Ascent’s cabin with the chocolate exterior and vanilla interior a delicious if impractical choice for a family or wearer of dark denim. The doors thunk when closing, and switches and levers are weighty. Cargo room is plentiful even with all the seats up.
On the road, the Subaru Ascent is a durable, well-balanced vehicle, with a sure-footed feel thanks in part to standard AWD and a quiet, well-insulated cabin. Road noise is kept to a minimum, even riding on 20” tires. The CVT engine complains on aggressive uphills and can shift too much on the descent, but overall acceleration is excellent for entering the highway or popping away from a stoplight.

Midsize sedans are not exactly sweeping the nation, but the 2021 BMW 540i xDrive is a thoroughly engaging example of this dying breed. Blessed with a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with 335 horses and a 48V mild hybrid technology, the 540i is an absolute joy to drive.
Quiet, refined, smooth as silk and gobbling up Connecticut potholes with ease, this BMW is delish. The optional Dynamic Handling package enhances chassis control and stabilization. Add the $1,850 Premium Pack for a host of goodies and the pricy $3,300 M Sport package for variable sport steering, perfect for maximizing the fun of driving a low-profile sedan.
The interior materials are as well-appointed as expected and the $1,000 luxury seating package adds multi-contoured, ventilated seats.
The iDrive infotainment system, celebrating 20 years, is enhanced by Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, although gesture control is not ideal for my Italian flamboyancy; I regularly and inadvertently activated a variety of functions.
I quite appreciated the overhead camera visual showing the door swing reach when parking, part of the $800 Parking Assistance Package.
Nowadays, driving is just as therapeutic as utilitarian. The 2021 BMW 540i xDrive reminds one of when driving was just as delightful as practical.
